Many thanks, have looked at that, and here, in !TransFSI's !Run, there 
are the lines:

Set File$Type_695 GIF
Set File$Type_69C BMP
Set File$Type_C85 JPEG
Set File$Type_FF0 TIFF

Set FFGServer$TransFSI -T &695 &FF9 -T &69C &FF9 -T &C85 &FF9 -R 
TransFSI$Dir

so I think it should know about the GIF format!

That could possibly be the problem, but the error message persisted 
after I had opened the directory containing ChangeFSI. Hang on a 
moment: it's in Utilities, so shouldn't it automatically be seen?

Now, that I think is the problem; there's no line in ChangeFSI's !Run 
file that mentions filetype 695. Presumably there should be, but I 
have in my ignorance no idea of the syntax. Any guidance, please? Do I 
just copy one of the Set Alias$@RunType lines, substituting Type_695?
