There is the dreaded triplet:

{bold on}
{bold off}
{bold}

Three different things.

The first means "bold", when applied over any combination of styles turn on bold.

The second is the exact opposite *not bold*, when applied over any combination of styles turn off bold.

The last means "cancel bold effect", any bold setting from styles will appear.

I'm not sure if Impression understands the three states, but OP does, and possibly so does the DDF translator.
