The music-theatre production Corpo, Carne e Espírito (Body, Flesh and Spirit), 
created by Johannes Birringer (digital choreography) and Paulo C. Chagas 
(music), will premiere at the 9th International Theatre Festival of Belo 
Horizonte (Brasil) on June 27-29, 2008, featuring an ensemble of musicians and 
vocalists, and a triptych of film projections and animations inspired by the 
figural paintings of Francis Bacon. The work investigates the invisible forces 
of the human body in the contexts of new music composition (electronic and 
acoustic), interactive technology, and immersive environments. 

The music for this audiovisual work was composed by Paulo C. Chagas, inspired 
by the paintings of bodily deformations and anamorphoses in Bacon's oeuvre. It 
features three voices (soprano, counter-tenor, baritone), string quartet, 
percussion and electronic sounds that are integrated in the visual and 
performance environment designed by Johannes Birringer. The oratorio will be 
conducted by Mr Chagas; live programming of the image movements, projected onto 
a curved triptych of screens upstage behind the musicians, will be performed by 
Mr. Birringer.

Corpo, Carne e Espírito's digital scenarios and digitalized performance 
choreographies were developed in London at the DAP Lab; the music rehearsals 
and scenographic integrations are conducted in Belo Horizonte in June 2008, 
where the new work is commissioned to open the 2008 FIT Theatre Festival on 
June 27-29. The oratorio will tour European venues in 2009.

During their residency at FIT Theatre Festival, Mr Chagas and Mr Birringer will 
also conduct workshops in composition and digital performance.

The 9th International Theatre Festival of Belo Horizonte is the largest edition 
since the Festival's foundation in 1994. It is promoted by the City Hall of 
Belo Horizonte, along with FLAMA (Artistic Education Foundation), and sponsored 
by Petrobras, CEMIG, OI, USIMINAS, and the cultural support of Funarte, Casa do 
Conde, Oi Futuro, Usicultura, and Federal and State of Minas Gerais agencies to 
stimulate culture. The Festival opens on June 26 with a concert by Antonio 
Nobrega, and runs from June 26th to July 6th, featuring 34 performances, 18 on 
stage, 9 on alternative spaces, and 7 on the street, including an itinerant 
performance. There will also be several interventions by Puppet Theatre groups.

Corpo, Carne e Espírito

O espetáculo, que estréia mundialmente no FIT-BH/2008, investiga as forças 
invisíveis do corpo humano nos contextos da criação artística, da tecnologia 
interativa e dos ambientes virtuais. Sua base é a música do brasileiro Paulo C. 
Chagas, inspirada nas pinturas e na vida do pintor irlandês Francis Bacon. A 
composição para três vozes (soprano, contra-tenor e barítono), quarteto de 
cordas, percussão e música eletrônica é executada ao vivo, integrada ao 
ambiente visual e performático concebido por Johannes Birringer.

Público alvo: estudantes de teatro e dança, grupos de teatro e dança, 
profissionais de comunicação, música, desing, vídeo, informática e público em

Vagas: 200 participantes sendo 100 vagas preenchidas mediante 
inscrição/avaliação de currículo via site, no período de 07 a 13 de junho e 100 
vagas destinadas às escolas de formação de artes cênicas, ao Projeto 
Laboratório e a convidados. 



APRESENTAÇÃO

O Festival Internacional de Teatro Palco & Rua de Belo Horizonte - FIT BH - é 
realizado na cidade de Belo Horizonte, estado de Minas Gerais, no Brasil, no 
período de 26 de junho a 6 de julho de 2008.
Nesta 9ª edição, durante 11 dias, 17 grupos internacionais, 9 nacionais e 13 
locais apresentarão 41 espetáculos, escolhidos a partir dos critérios da 
qualidade e da diversidade.
Uma programação voltada para o aprofundamento na formação dos profissionais de 
artes cênicas - os Eventos Especiais - também será realizada antes e durante o 
Festival.
À noite, no Ponto de Encontro do evento, onde se reunirão os participantes do 
evento e o público, acontecerão vários shows e intervenções.

espectáculos seleccionados a partir de los criterios de calidad y diversidad. 
Los Eventos Especiales, una programación dirigida a profundizar en la formación 
de los profesionales de las artes escénicas, también será realizada antes y 
durante el Festival. En la noche, el Punto de Encuentro del Festival, en que 
acontecerán varios shows e intervenciones, se reunirán los participantes del 
evento y el público.
