Performing Technology: User Content and the New Digital Media
This is a call for papers to appear in an edited volume with the provisional title of “Performing Technology: User Content and the New Digital Media” to be published at the end of 2009 by Cambridge Scholars Publishing Ltd. (www.c-s-p.org).
The call was developed for the The Two-Thousand + NINE Symposium (http://twothousand.wordpress.com ) which will take place in Belfast at the Sonic Arts Research Center on May, 16th 2009 (Co-hosted by the European 2007 project CO-ME-DI-A - Cooperation and Mediation in Digital Arts: www.comedia.eu.org/co/comedia-home.html)
This symposium will feature invited researchers from fields as diverse as music, architecture, design, philosophy, dance or technology to address the interface between creative practice and user-led content in new media. It is envisaged that selected papers from this symposium will feature alongside other selected submissions. All papers published in the journal will have to undergo a peer review process, based on initial editor screening.
All articles must address the theme of the symposium and must be between 3-5000 words in length. 

Symposium Theme:
Dissemination of "content" has dramatically been challenged by environments such as Facebook, Youtube and Second Life as these introduce notionally open platforms that live off content created by users. Although user generated content has fulfilled the engagement requirement of many social networking environments, a question emerges in relation to the role of creative practice in a context which promotes malleable, transitory and user-led media. In a world of post- personalisation, digital media is faced with issues of locality, context and mobility. Although numerous applications have been built on creating environments within which personal preferences, approaches or visions can be implemented, the question of how design processes and creative practice strategies address these new media is still unanswered.
- How do notions of open form and interactive media relate to user- centred interaction design? - What does the shift from object to environment imply for contemporary artistic practice? - How can we develop design strategies for addressing rich media environments which incorporate user-generated, locative and sensor- based content? 


Deadlines:
The deadlines for this call are as follows:
500 word abstract (emailed in word or pdf format) to the editor: April 3rd, 2009. (Authors will be notified within one week and asked to proceed to develop their papers with a provisional view to publication in the "Performing Technology: User Content and the New Digital Media" volume). 
Full manuscript ready for Peer Review:  June 29th, 2009
Feedback and suggestions by peer-review panel: August 3rd, 2009
Revised Copies of manuscripts due:  August 31st,  2009
Publication Date: November 2009

Submission of an article to the journal will be taken to imply that it presents original, unpublished work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article have been given to the publishers. This does not affect your intellectual property rights. On acceptance of the paper, authors will need to sign an agreement between Publisher, Editor and Contributor for the publication of their work by Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
