Canadian Falun Gong Practitioners Complete 6000 km Cross-Canada SOS! Rescue

Toronto/Ottawa/Vancouver/Montreal, December 3, 2001 ? On Friday November 30,
Canadian Falun Gong practitioners arrived in Thunder Bay, Ontario to complete
the last leg of the 6000km, 85-day cross-Canada walk to ?SOS! Urgent: Rescue
the Falun Gong practitioners persecuted in China.?

The walk came out of concern over the increasingly brutal persecution of Falun
Gong practitioners in China, lead by Chinese president Jiang Zemin. At least
320 Falun Gong practitioners are confirmed to have died form torture in police
custody, while sources in the Chinese government admit the number is over
1000. Canadian Falun Gong practitioners were inspired by the Chinese
practitioners? peaceful actions amidst the violent campaign.

?We are inspired by the great compassion and forbearance of the Falun Gong
practitioners in China. Facing brutal persecution and defamation, they have
upheld their belief. They did not give in.? said Tonggui Ye of Toronto who
participated in the walk. ?They simply want people to know that Falun Dafa is
good and the persecution is wrong.?

The walk began on September 7, 2001 when 5 women started a 20-day segment from
Toronto to Ottawa. The walkers were welcomed by MPs, Senators, and hundreds of
supporters on Parliament Hill on September 27.

?It is the duty of every citizen in every free and just society, to express
their indignation towards oppression, torture and murder,? said MP Colleen
Beaumier at the welcome ceremony. ?I would like to commend all Canadians
who?ve supported Falun Dafa?.

The walkers delivered 95,000 signatures of support from Canadians to Prime
Minister Jean Chretien. Several continued on to the United Nations in New York
City, delivering these signatures to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and
calling on the UN to do all it can to stop the persecution of Falun Gong in

There were also groups that walked from Vancouver to Calgary, Calgary to
Winnipeg, Winnipeg to Thunder Bay and Toronto to Thunder Bay.

The walkers included businessmen, Ph.D. students, grandmothers, and housewives
from Asian, North American and Central American backgrounds. The husbands of
two of the walkers, Jinyu Li, a Montreal artist, and Li Zhang of Toronto, a
former environmental engineer in Beijing, are still imprisoned in China for
practicing Falun Gong.

The peaceful, kind and determined efforts of these walkers touched the hearts
of Canadians along the way. In British Columbia, a high school student
encountered the group of walkers and was amazed by their efforts. He wanted
to show his support, so he walked with the group for 10 whole days.

One policeman in Port Hope, Ontario was very touched upon encountering the
group of walkers traveling to Ottawa. He decided to drive beside the walkers
in his car, giving them a personal escort for several kilometers to the end of
his jurisdiction.

Orillia Ontario Mayor Ron Stevens was among the dozens of government officials
to have written in support of the walkers. He said, ?The cause you are
supporting is truly an admiral one. Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance, the
principles of Falun Gong, are needed now more than ever. The vicious
persecution against Falun Gong by the government of China cannot be condoned.?

Two weeks ago, two Canadians, joined by over 30 other western Falun Gong
practitioners from 12 countries, went to Beijing?s Tiananmen Square to
peacefully appeal. They wanted to break the information blockage imposed by
the Chinese president and let Chinese people know that Falun Gong is welcome
and practiced around the world.
