Imprisoned husband of Canadian Citizen Released in China;
Alarm Expressed at Dramatic Increase in Persecution of Falun Gong
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa - Professor Irwin Cotler, M.P., International Legal Counsel to Jinyu Li
and Mr. Alex Neve, Secretary-general of Amnesty International will join Jingyu
Li to hold a press conference on the occasion of the release of her husband,
ShenLi Lin, from prison in China.

They will call on Chinese authorities to facilitate Shenli's departure and
reunification with his wife living in Canada; and to end the "alarming"
increase in torture, detention, and imprisonment of Falun Gong practitioners.

Time:           1:30pm, Wednesday, January 30, 2002
Location: Charles Lynch Conference Room, 130-S Center Block
                        Parliament Building, Ottawa

Shenli and Jinyu were arrested in the government appeal office when they were
trying to clarify the truth to the officials that Falun Gong is good and the
persecution should be stopped. Jinyu was deported. Shenli was later sent to
the labour camp. He was due to be released on July 23rd, 2001. However, his
imprisonment was arbitrarily extended for another 6 month without giving any
reason. His wife, Jinyu Li, had been tirelessly petitioning for his release.

Amnesty International of Canada, Media, general public and Members of
Parliament and Senators throughout country added their voice for Shenli Lin's
release, which resulted from the great effort from kind Canadian people.

But, the persecution in China has worsened. In the past month alone, at least
30 Falun Gong practitioners have been tortured to death in labor camps or
detention centers. To date, 358 Falun Gong practitioners have been persecuted
to death; over 20,000 were sent to labor camps without any legal procedures;
Countless numbers of Falun Gong practitioners have encountered beatings and
physical punishment; families are broken, millions of relatives, friends and
colleagues are affected.

Falun Gong practitioners' peaceful protest against the persecution and their
pursuit for "Truth-Compassion-Forbearance" has won international support.
