Jacob from Harrison, Arizona wants the scoop on how to build a BattleBot for the Comedy Central Show, BattleBots. Basically, it features warfare between remote controlled robots. Not particularly digital, but tres fun: http://www.battlebots.com Leo says the BattleBot a guest brought on the show a couple years ago ripped a few holes in our floor. More importantly, he said over the years he'd been building it, he'd dropped "several hundred thousand dollars in it. Woah... I'd rather own a house. We doubt you have to spend that much money. We'd start cultivating friends at machine shops right now. Here's the BattleBots' own set of links that show you how other BattleBot builders do it: http://www.battlebots.com/build.html * Netscape don't play that Emil from Elkins, West Virginia just finished his first Web site. An MPEG video he's got on it plays fine through Internet Explorer, but not Netscape. We'd check to make sure the browser has an app set up to play that MPEG viddy, such as QuickTime or Windows Media Player or Real. While you're at it, try playing it from someone else's Netscape install to make sure it's not just yours! * Video Card Drivers Doug from Austin, Texas has an Elsa 3D video card, and wants to know if he should use the drivers from nVidia, or from Elsa. We use both the 'reference drivers' from the chipmakers (In this case, nVidia.) and the drivers provided by the folks that build the board you actually buy with the chip on it. (In this case, Elsa.) It really depends on what we're doing with the system. The board makers usually have WHQL certified drivers; that's the Windows Hardware Quality Labs. They're guaranteed to run safe and sound by Microsoft's rules. WHQL drivers are often a touch slower for gaming. Here's a link to the WHQL pages: http://www.microsoft.com/hwtest/default.asp The drivers from the board maker might have special features. Some over clock the board, or tweak other settings, such as the color on the screen. Board makers often have both WHQL certified and non-certified drivers. I'm convinced that the latter are usually faster on 3D games, though I usually use the WHQL certified drivers for machines I don't use for gaming. The drivers from the chipmaker usually lack these niceties. Play around with the latest drivers from each. We often benchmark 'em to see which run faster. Here's an article Robert Heron wrote for us on nVidia's Detonator 3 drivers on just how fast they really are: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/story/0,23158,3302059,00.html * DSL protocols Jody from Nashville, Tennessee has a DSL broadband connection. His ISP said gave him the option of connecting to their servers by PPPoA, PPPoE, or a bridged config. PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) has become very common, as it allows ISPs to better govern their networks. It's also a huge pain to use, since you have to 'dial up' the ISP whenever you want to browse the web. We say go for the bridged config! Your 'net access will always be on. Just run some firewall software to keep your system safe. We're not fans of PPPoE: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,23008,2443984,00.html DSLReports.com has a ton of info on this: http://www.dslreports.com/information/kb/PPPoA * CD Video Quality Joshua from Loretto, Tennessee has an ATI All-In-Wonder and wants to use it to record video from his satellite dish and record it onto a CD. And he wants it to be at least VHS quality. That's gonna be tough, Joshua. The existing specification for VCD (video compact disc) does not allow for better than VHS quality. In fact, if you want more than an hour of video on that CD, you'll have a tough time getting video that good on it. Even MPEG 4/DiVX;-)compression tends to show artifacts if you squeeze it too tight. (And it definitely won't play on a DVD player!) Here's Leo's article on how to make VCDs: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/story/0,23158,3308675,00.html * Sound card conundrum Kevin from Kingsport, Tennessee wants to know how he can make his sound card play audio from more than one application at a time. It depends on the card, Kevin. Leo's positive your SoundBlaster 16 won't do it. Fortunately, you can get a new sound card pretty cheap these days; we've seen PCI boards for under $30. * Overclock your Palm... hehehe Steven from Wynnewood, Pennsylvania wants to know if he can really overclock his Palm Pilot. Yup, Steven, you can hot rod your PDA. You'll want to download a program called Afterburner, or Afterburner II. We found it over at PalmGear HQ: http://www.palmgear.com You might be able to make the processor in your Palm run at 175% of its original speed. One thing to worry about; we've heard overclocking your Palm will absolutely KILL its battery life. At least that's what the folks that use it to run Liberty, a GameBoy emulator for the Palm OS, tell us. Have you backed up your favorite files today?
