Leo's Classic Show Notes for Wednesday, February 28, 2001....

* CD Colors

George from Dumas, AR wants to know what color CD-R media to
buy. It doesn't matter. The different colors are just from
different dyes used in the process. You should use the
cheapest CD-R media that works in your drive.

For lots more good info on CD-RW visit the FAQ at
http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq.

You can get excellent media online cheap from
http://www.cdrecordable.com.

* Happy99 Virus

Shelley from St Louis, MO did a bad bad thing. She opened an
email attachment and got the Happy99 worm. The first thing to
do is disconnect from the Internet so the worm doesn't mail
itself to your friends. Next, use a friend's computer to get
the disinfectant from

http://tm0.com/sbct.cgi?s=117655167&i=308608&d=1111595

For future, get a good anti-virus, keep it up to date, and use
it. And, most importantly, never open email attachments!

Incidentally, Patrick and I will be making a personal
appearance in St Louis on February 3. Details to follow!

* The Best Programming Language for Beginners

CC in Las Vegas, NV is in Middle School and wants to learn
programming, but he doesn't know where to start. Almost any
language can get you started but some are easier to learn,
teach you better habits, and are just more fun.

My favorite language for beginners fits those criteria, and is
freely available for almost any operating system. Download a
copy from http://www.python.org then buy a book like "Learn to
Program Using Python" from Addison-Wesley,
http://www.awlonline.com/product/0,2627,0201709384,00.html,
and dig in.

I believe Python is the best language for schools to start
with. For more information about Python in Education visit the
SIG at http://www.python.org/sigs/edu-sig/.

* Muting Modem

Rich wants to turn his modem down. In AOL check the modem
settings. With any other ISP open Dial-up Networking (it's
under Settings in the Start menu) and right click your ISP's
entry. Click Properties, then press the Configure... button.
Slide the slider all the way to the left to turn the modem
noise off.

One word of warning, however. Don't turn down the modem until
you're sure you've got the right number. It's not nice to dial
humans with your modem.

* Counting Files

Randy from Maybee, MI thinks he has 15,000 MP3 files. Maybe.
He wants an easy way to count them. In Windows, just put all
the MP3's into a folder, then right click the folder, and
select properties. Windows will calculate the size of the
folder and the number of files and sub-folders.

* How much power does does a monitor pull in standby

Keith in Santa Barbara, CA wants to know how much power his
monitor uses when it's sleeping. None. Most monitors are
basically off when asleep. On the other hand your computer
still uses a few watts in sleep mode.

* Email Answers

Patrick was looking for a sub $500 computer. They do exist. I
found an e-machine for $399 here:

http://www.e4me.com/infocentral/product_etower600is.html

You might also check the Dell Factory Outlet for great deals
on computers that have been returned but are otherwise AOK

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/default.htm

Grandma Max wanted to know how to make her AVIs small enough
to email. If your capture oftware can't do it, try Real
Producer. It's free from

http://proforma.real.com/rn/tools/producer/index.html?src=noref,nosrc,prdctmn_123100,prdcr_010501a

That's it from Call for Help. Thanks for watching. See you
tomorrow. Meanwhile, remember, it's not your fault!
