Hello all,
I hope your summer is going well.
I just wanted to inform you that despite much outcry, our venue for the
conference, the Leslie Frost Centre, has now closed. I am currently working
with our conference organization team to relocate the conference to a
meeting downtown in Toronto (likely, or in the Greater Toronto Area). The
date may also have to change, depending on availability at this late date.
Due to the cost of accommodation, we may have to make this a one-day
conference in order to keep the cost down and attract registrants to attend.
My apologies to out-of-Province attendees if this does occur. One or two day
conference will depend on the new availability of speakers and the
willingness to pay for Toronto accommodation costs.
On the up side, I will try to make the conference free or of minimal cost in
order to attract more attendees. Registrations to date were very low, with
no out-of-Province registrants to date, despite overwhelming positive
response by our CSEB members to the topic. Please contact Wendy ASAP if you
are from out-of-Province and wish to attend. We need to gauge the interest
by out-of-Province members in attending this year's conference.
We have refocused the conference to be 'Linking Landscapes: Planning for
Restoration in Urban and Rural Environments' and we will be advertising to
NGO's to attend to learn about conservation biology and how to plan to apply
it practically on the ground, with a focus on restoring ecosystem function
within urban and rural settings through innovative approaches. This will
entail a rethinking of the way we currently do business in practice order to
effect the changes we need to make. An afternoon workshop to discuss these
changes required and how to do so will be held, with the outcome becoming
part of a public input document to the province on planning policy changes
now underway in Ontario.
As I will be away for 2 weeks as of Monday, July 26, to Tues, Aug 10, any
email should also be directed also to Wendy Thomson at wendy@xxxxxxxxxxx if
you have any queries.
For your information, the Latornell conference hosted by Conservation
Ontario, is being held from November 17-19, 2004 and the topic is
'Stewardship: From Strategies to Actions'. In order to avoid duplication
with this conference, the refocus on 'planning for restoration', rather than
'planning and restoration', I felt was necessary. See
http://www.latornell.ca <http://www.latornell.ca/>
For those on the west coast of Canada interested in Restoration, the Society
for Ecological Restoration and Canadian Land Reclamation Association are
hosting a conference in Victoria, BC from Aug 24-26, 2004. See

Thanks all for your understanding.
