National CSEB Conference 2002 Theme:
Environmental Monitoring and Biological Systems
Approaches and Practice
More and more we need to know whether human activities are having an impact
on the environment, and in particular on the biological systems which are
such an important part. The controversy over global warming shows, however,
that achieving this goal is far from easy. From determining whether
industrial activities affect the environment, to showing how a multitude of
changes in natural ecosystems are influenced by diverse factors,
environmental monitoring of biological systems is an important concern to
all biologists.
Environmental monitoring is one of the most challenging pursuits of the
modern age. This conference will focus on environmental monitoring with
emphasis on biological systems. Topics will include:
* environmental effects monitoring (EEM) of industrial activities
including offshore development, metal mining, pulp and paper, and tidal
power;
* what to measure: parameters, variables and techniques;
* terrestrial, freshwater and marine systems;
* resource industries: fishing, aquaculture, forestry, agriculture;
* environmental monitoring as a discipline;
* alternate approaches: citizen-based monitoring, model ecosystems,
protected areas;
* statistics and sampling design;
* monitoring tools, e.g. biotechnology;
* biological sampling protocols (mussel watch, toxicity testing);
* role of legislation and legislative requirements;
* case studies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Presentations will interest public and private sectors, including academics,
consultants, government representatives involved in various aspects of
environmental monitoring.

Ahhh.. Halifax, the city by the ocean. The capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax
is surrounded by water on 3 sides; a peninsula with many parks and
waterfront places in which to relax and enjoy the slower pace of this laid
back city of over 300,000.
I look forward to seeing you all in May!
