The Minerals and Metals Indicators (MMI) Steering Committee is seeking 2
ENGO representatives to participate in the MMI Initiative as a member of the
multi-stakeholder Advisory Group.
Appointed by the Minerals and Metals Sector (MMS) of Natural Resources
Canada (NRCan), the MMI Steering Committee is a multi-stakeholder committee
of nine individuals who are overseeing the development of national level
indicators to measure the contribution of Canada's minerals and metals
sector to sustainable development. The work of the Steering Committee is
being supported by a Secretariat hosted by NRCan. For more information and
a listing of our Steering Committee members, visit the MMI website at:
www.nrcan.gc.ca/mms/mmi . See below the
application form background information on the MMI Initiative.
The Steering Committee is committed to consulting with a broader group of
stakeholders within Canada's minerals and metals sector in the development
of sustainable development indicators. To this end, they are seeking the
input of 2 ENGO representatives to give their expertise to the MMI
Initiative as a member of the Advisory Group.
The Advisory Group will convene at the indicator development workshop to be
held Wednesday, November 13 to Friday, November 15 in Edmonton, Alberta; the
workshop would commence on the evening of November 13. Subsequent to this
workshop, the Advisory group members would be asked to continue to
participate in on-line/phone fora to further develop the indicators
throughout fall/winter 2003, and to reconvene at a second workshop in April
2003 to refine the indicators and provide recommendations on a possible core
set of indicators to the Steering Committee.
Travel, accommodation, meals and incidentals will be covered. Per diems may
be offered, but this will only be confirmed in a few weeks.
If you are interested in participating, please fill-out the application form
below and sent it no later than October 15 to Chantal Bois, CEN National

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
****************************
The Indicator Program has two phases:
Phase I focused on defining the goals and objectives underlying the
sustainable development of minerals and metals; the intent of Phase II is to
identify/develop the indicators. A Steering Committee has been convened to
oversee Phase II (listed on the web site). This group has been charged with
ensuring that Phase II both considers and remains 'true' to Phase I
conclusions, while also incorporating some of the more recent thinking that
has emerged/evolved since Phase I, as for example, in the Mining, Minerals
and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project.
The outcome of the Phase I consultation, including the listing of
participants, is accessible on the website at
.
In compiling the Advisory Group of approximately 20 individuals for Phase
II, an attempt was made to include 'experts' that would be able to speak to
the sustainable development dimensions for which indicators would be
required (informed by the Phase I categories) and in addition, to represent
the broadest range of stakeholders to the degree possible considering the
size of the group. Invitations to participate in the Advisory Group were
sent to representatives from Aboriginal communities (2); provincial
government ministries (3); federal government departments (1); NGOs (3);
mining companies (5); academics (2); industry research institute (1); labour
(1); federal development agency (1); consultants in sociology (1) and
materials engineering & design (1); and a multi-stakeholder initiative in
biodiversity stewardship (1). The composition of the Advisory Group is
subject to change pending acceptance of the invitations.
Other opportunities for stakeholder participation in MMI Phase II will be
possible throughout the technical review process/consultations on the draft
indicators that will be identified by the Advisory Group (the technical
review will be guided by recommendations/suggestions from the Advisory
Group) and a peer review process to review the final indicators following
technical review. The intent is to 'cast broadly' in gathering
input/feedback on the indicators.
