A GREEN ENERGY VISION FOR ONTARIO
Learning and Organizing for Change
[revised September 2, 2005]
WHAT: A Teach-In to learn about energy alternatives and build a
green energy future for Ontario (see agenda below).
WHEN: On the evening of Friday September 30 at 7:00 p.m. there will
be a keynote address by energy expert Ralph Torrie and workshops
will be held all day Saturday October 1, 2005, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
WHERE: Native Canadian Centre, 16 Spadina Road, Toronto (North of
Bloor - Spadina subway stop on the Bloor line)
WHO: Ontarians, young and old, who want their province to abandon
polluting sources of power, such as coal and nuclear power, and are
looking for the knowledge and know- how to fight for green energy.
WHY: Ontario has an historic opportunity.We’re phasing out coal
generating stations and, without refurbishment, all 20 nuclear
reactors will have to be shut down by 2020.Ontario has the
opportunity to make the switch to clean, safe, climatefriendly
green energy.
The problem?The McGuinty government is rebuilding old nuclear
reactors, and says that new nuclear plants will have to be built.
Ontarians must organize for change.
$? The Teach-In is free and is being organized by environmental
groups on their donated time and resources.If you or your
organization can make a donation, please do.Organizations are
encouraged to sponsor the transportation costs and lodging of any
representatives they may send. But everyone is welcome. Please attend.

non- violent direct action (civil- disobedience) on Sunday, October
2nd.If you’re interested, let us know. REGISTER! You must register

Keynote address by Ralph Torrie - “From Electricity Crisis to
Green Power Opportunity”
Ralph Torrie has been studying and writing about sustainable energy
issues since he became involved in the Ontario Commission on
Electric Power Planning 30 years ago. He is the co-designer of
environmental planning software over 300 municipalities and
companies around the world and the author of “Kyoto and Beyond” for
the David Suzuki Foundation and the Canadian Climate Action
Network.In 2002 he received the Canadian Environment Silver Award
work on energy and climate change. His keynote address will review
the historic development of our dirty electricity, and chart a
sustainable future that will allow us to keep the lights on and
avoid frying or irradiating the planet.

A panel presentation will set the scene for where the green energy
movement is at in Ontario and what we need to do to ensure a coal-
free and nuclear-free future. Jack Gibbons, Ontario Clean Air

Sustainable Energy Association; Shawn-Patrick Stensil, Greenpeace
Canada.
The Politics of Nuclear Power
A panel discussing the politics of Ontario’s political future,
featuring Dwight Duncan, Energy Minister (invited), Howard Hampton,
NDP Leader & Energy Critic, Paul Charbonneau, Green Party Energy
Critic, Michael Mehta, author, Risky Business: Nuclear Power &
Pubic Protest in Canada.
For the final plenary - Action for the Future - all workshops will
be asked to recommend two actions for discussion at the final plenary.
