Film Showing & Discussion on Immigrant Rights, Labor Struggle and Women's
Liberation
"BREAD AND ROSES"
One of the best labor films of recent times, Bread & Roses (Ken Loach, 2000,
105 min.) begins with a young Mexican woman crossing the border as an
undocumented immigrant in search of work and a better life. It goes on to
portray the tumultuous process in which she learns to become a leader in a
victorious struggle for basic workers’ and women’s rights, waged by immigrants
from many lands. The title derives from the 1912 strike by immigrant textile
workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, known as the “Bread and Roses strike.”
Based on a true story, Bread & Roses is inspiring, a powerful learning
experience, and highly timely today.
