*Background:* There are many protests coming up in the next two weeks
around the inauguration . Some are emphatically pro-Democratic Party actions
that we would not participate in at all. This is the case of the "women's
march" on January 21 (in NYC and Washington, D.C.), which is a blatantly
pro-Hillary Cllinton event. On Friday, January 20 (Inauguration Day)
itself, there are several protest marches in Washington, D.C. The march
by ANSWER (a front group of the Stalinoid Party of Socialism and
Liberation) is "popular-frontist" in that the calls for it have no
criticism whatsoever of the Democratic Party, so their "everyone against
Trump" appeal is an implicit bid for a bloc with Democrats. There are also
a couple of anarchist/liberal events in D.C.
The Internationalist Group, CUNY Internationalist Clubs, Class Struggle
Education Workers and Trabajadores Internacionales clasistas have called to
oppose Trump, but we also oppose the Democrats and all capitalist parties
and politicians.
Workers World Party has called a demonstration starting at Union Station
in Washington at 6 a.m. They plan to march to the White House at 10 a.m.,
although how far they will get is another matter. In contrast to the other
marches, this one (*http://j20resist.org/* ;<http://j20resist.org/>) claims
to be "against both capitalist parties" and talks about a "fight for
socialism." Our plan is to march with our banner(s) in this march. That
does not mean we agree politically with the WWP, which regularly makes
political blocs with Democrats, and for years was a main organizer of
popular-front "antiwar" marches with prominent Democratic Party "doves" on
the platform. We also have to be alert, as they may try to pull some stunts
that could be problematic in a situation where there will be a huge police
mobilization and aggressuve right-wingers running around.
WWP is sending buses to Washington for the Friday, January 20 protest that
will leave from their office (147 W. 24th Street, Manhattan) at midnight,
arriving back in New York around 9-10 p.m. Friday night. We plan to
purchase a block of tickets to go on those buses. Those going should meet
up with us there at 11 p.m., Thursday. They are charging $40 round-trip,
and $25 for students or those on fixed income. The Internationalist Group
will subsidize the cost for those marching with us so that the *cost to
individuals is $15*. You can pay at departure, but * we need a commitment
from people who wish to go by tomorrow night (Sunday, January 8)* so we
can buy the tickets in advance. If you need more time, please get back to
us about your situation.
For those who cannot go to Washington, there will be a student walkout in
New York on January 20 that is scheduled to meet up at Foley Square
(downtown Manhattan) at 5 p.m. There are also Bernie Sanders events on
January 15, and Martin Luther King Day events on January 16. We will
consult in coming days about how to deal with NYC events, depending partly
on how many people will be going to D.C., and how many will be in New York.
