Dear comrades and friends,

Lynne Stewart, longtime fighter for the oppressed, died on Tuesday. She had
been battling cancer for many years. She was known in New York and around
the country as a radical civil rights lawyer, who fought for the most
downtrodden and especially those locked away in the brutal US prison
system. That system could not tolerate her existence and sought to locker
her away forever--for the "crime" of being a lawyer. In a sinister move,
the government prosecuted Lynne for a non-crime: the violation of a
warden-imposed rule against her imprisoned client, the blind Sheik Abdul
Rahman. Outrageously sentenced to 28 months and disbarred, the government
came back and demanded that she be *resentenced to 10 years!* She was sent
to one of their Texas dungeons at the age of 70.

The Internationalist Group was active in her defense and the campaign to
free her and save her life. She was released in 2014 after a hard fight to
allow her to receive cancer treatment. She reentered the struggle at once
(actually she never left it--her letters from prison were inspiring). Here
she is, with her partner Ralph Poynter, standing next to our comrades in
April 2014, at the emergency protest to save the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal,
who was and still is being denied life-saving medical care.

Lynne died fighting for all of us and her life is an inspiration for
revolutionaries around the world.
