Over the past 20 years, the strong demographic growth of the countries
of the South and the proliferation of free trade agreements have
sometimes led to massive imports of cheap products coming directly from
the countries of the North! Unable to resist such pressure, thousands of
small producers in the South have gone bankrupt, losing their only means
of subsistence.
At the same time, large industrial farms are established near urban
areas. In addition to poor animal welfare considerations, deforestation
and over-consumption of water and fossil fuels imposed by such
production systems result in severe environmental damage and
unprecedented health crises, which are harmful to the whole of the
planet.
