Last night CNN Believer aired an episode on religion/Vodou in Haiti; I
thought you all might be interested.
Erol Josue (Bureau Nationale d¹Ethnologie), Jean-Daniel Lafontant
(Peristil Nah Rih Veh), Manbo Beatrice Daleus (Ministère des Affaires
Etrangères et des Cultes) and I all participated on camera. Reza is
certainly very smart and quick, and is a scholar of religion, which is why
I myself participated; I appreciated his take-down of Islamophobes on Fox
News some years ago. He wants to think he is portraying various
misunderstood religions in a sympathetic light in this series. But we have
all heard this claim before. It is not the film I would have made. It
seems to be getting mixed, mostly positive, reviews.
Meanwhile, the historian Millery Polyne and I co-authored an opinion
piece for CNN.com <http://cnn.com/> on how and why Vodou has been
consistently misrepresented in history and the effects on young Haitians.
Also, after Millery and I spoke up to CNN about their PR posters with the
wrong spelling, they are adding a sidebar on CNN.com <http://cnn.com/>
explaining the proper spelling.
I mention all of this as a head¹s up and in case anybody else wants to
write reaction pieces or use it to time the release of anything else
related to your work on Haiti-related subjects.
