I start noticing a pattern that basically translates like this: The more
we know about a phenomenon in Haiti (i.e. its roots causes, its
developments, and its impacts) the worst this phenomenon gets, and
sometimes, deviating it from its original path… For instance, it seems to
me the more we know/talk about farming and agricultural techniques used in
Haiti, the less productive the land becomes; that we now realize the
southern part of Haiti is more verdant than the northern part, probably
turning into its head that 2% forestation coverage so talk about, suddenly
it's ok to cut trees for charcoal uses; that there were no polio in Haiti
since the 1980's, all of a sudden polio was discovered after CDC received
large funding to combat it...
It seems that studies try to fit narratives and accommodate funding rather
than the other way around. And finally, it seems to me that most of the
knowledge acquired from research in Haiti did not contribute to reducing
vulnerability and poverty but rather….....if you follow my logic, the
conclusion is daring.
I still advocate for research/studies that include perspectives and wisdom
buried deeply underneath the sackcloth and ashes of Haiti’s locals.
