I have 2 of the PS/2 model P75 486 portables from a RS store, given to me
for free (well they had already tossed them, I salvaged them) and I had 3 or
4 of the previous 3k Tandy machines that I sold out for collectors last
year. Most of the RS stores are franchise and dealers for the most part so
why not sell them required Tandy stock to make the TRS system that much
bigger - profit first from your retailers, then from the sales to retail
customers.
I would rather order from one of the electronics houses like Digikey,
Allied, MCM, Jameco, JDR, etc and pay shipping - I get just about anything I
need, a lot cheaper, and they put out either CDrom or paper catalogs, my
choice. The Allied one is like 2" thick and I get that one as I use the book
for notes and more. Snce I got back into consumer electronics, household
appliances and power tool repair (along with sewing machines, household and
industrial) to bring in more income I have had a regular shipment from
Digikey every 2 weeks, and monthly from Allied. I haven't bought so much as
a pack of resistors from RS since the 94 catalog scam and prior to that I
spent probably $1000 yr in hobby and $2200 for repair parts from RS. Nice
thing is too I no longer have to act like a player taking the football
across the field to get into the mall RS stores. I liked it better when
Olson was in the back corner of some stores, LaSalle Electronics was in the
strip malls and RS stores were part of another business as a dealer, or also
in strip malls. I abso-friggin-lutely hate enclosed monster malls and stay
away from them with a passion. Super Walmarts are just as bad - giant store
and if you need TP and car fuses you park in a stupid place outside as they
have 15 handicapped spots that are never used right in the proximity of the
doors, then you walk waaaaaaayyyyyyy back to the TP, then across and to the
front for the automotive section, and then you find that where you parked is
even further from the wrong set of exit doors. I can just as easily hit the
Dollar General for the TP and stop at Napa next door for the fuses, takes
half the time as well and nearly as cheap - and no door dings in our van
sides or carts shoved against the grill.

I dont think RadioShack sells those "gazonta's".... K40 Electronics @
14/Van Dyke might... :)
At any rate...the RS catalogs (according to what I was told) were a
marketing idea to get people to just come back & stop "stocking up" on
catalogs. There was a coupon that covered what you paid for the catalog (i
seem to recall something about other coupons in one of them too).
They also said (June 1994) that they weren't going to upgrade the POS
(point of sale) systems from the Tandy 3000 386/16mhz systems to anything
higher because their "investment" in those were just about paid for
($5,000/ea was what I was told if we "lost one"...they upgraded those to
P75's in 1995).
WHY am I sharing this?? Stupidity of the corporate world maybe....? :)
