I don't doubt that Paul has a lot of time on a machine as many people now have started in their pre-teens but most of the things being posted by him take way more than a child to master, such as the S/36. I do know a guy about the same age that has time on a Cray but his father is a master programmer on them and has given the younger a lot of hands-on time with them. Also that's all he knows as he's not had time to dealve into other things such as hardware repair, other operating systems, etc but he'll be the first to tell you that while he's fantastic with all aspects of the Cray supers, he wouldn't know a PDP-11 from a System/34. I have 3 sons 20, 21 and 22 and they've had contact with all of this stuff due to me having it around, using it, and them being exposed and using it. Same as me having a really good idea of what a Chicago policeman's job is all about as my dad was one for my lifetime until I turned 35 when he retired (and me being in law enforcement for a period of nearly 8 yrs in the AF) but I'm not qualified to tell cops how to do their job. I wonder with all the time on the computer if he's had a chance to experience life yet? Go camping, get laid, get drunk, get married and have/raise 3 or 4 kids, lose a few jobs, get divorced, get sued a few times, lose a parent or two, do a few years in the military, etc and then stick that chest out and crow about experience. Well put Hal. -----Original Message----- From: computertalkshop-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:computertalkshop-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Hal Brown Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 6:12 AM To: computertalkshop@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [CTS] Re: RAM <snip> Well, this kid had me fooled. Sorry I got in on this late, but this is is remarkable. All this time he's been talking like he knows something and he hasn't been alive long enough to learn table manners. I thought he was just an arrogant old SOB and here he's a mere child, albeit one who needs to be taken out behind the shed and taught how to behave with people. Robert Frost was giving a lecture once at an college and when he got up to the podium he made a comment, a sorta of joke about being over 40 I think. Sorry, I can't remember what he said, but the students began to laugh. He was solumn, looked at them in astonishment, and said, "Why are you laughing? You couldn't possibility understand what that means, you haven't been alive long enough." One of the things about the Internet is, you can be anyone you want and who will know the difference? Well, Junior, it's a whole lot easier to laugh at your ignorance now that I know you're just a snot-nosed kid. Get out and get your hands dirty, bale hay, dig a ditch with guys who can't read, don a tux and mingle with the county club set, sell a car or real estate, fight a war in a jungle on the other side of the world, raise a family and deal with kids, let yourself go flat broke and then pull yourself up again, lose the people you love to death or divorce. And after you've really had some experience, come back and we'll see if you've learned the meaning of humility and empathy. Then we can talk about careers and experience. -- Hal Brown --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Computer Talk Shop To un-subscribe, http://questforcertification.com/cts/unsubscribe.htm List HowTo: http://questforcertification.com/cts/faq To join Computer Talk Shop's off topic list, please goto: http://questforcertification.com/cts/other_cts_lists.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
