As far as I know, a time stamp is part of the directory entry for each
file on your system. It records when the file was added or last changed.
If something messed it up, it must have gone through your directories to
do it. Maybe it was a crash or program malfunction. To be safe, scan the
system for errors and any virus/malware present.
