It sounds like you have to adjust the settings of the touch pad - it 
shouldn't do the things you describe.  I'm sure after adjusting them, 
you'll be more satisfied with it.
On a side note....a 69 year old gal I do computer work for, just started 
with computers 5 years ago with a laptop.  She recently upgraded to a 
model with a touchpad.  She caught onto it very quick, and no longer 
plugs her regular mouse in!  Different strokes for different folks I 
guess ;)
