Wow: IBM, Compaq, HP, and Sun are to announce Tuesday the formation of the
Gnome Foundation, "a developer consortium that will undertake, among other
things, the creation of a standardized desktop interface for Linux, and a
suite of productivity programs designed to compete with MS office."

It seems Sun will also use GNOME as their preferred desktop for Solaris.
That's another biggie, since Sun's always been in the CDE court. (CDE's a
commercial desktop environment)
And let's not forget the Eazel people, who are planning on a release by
the end of the year. Remember that they're all former Macintosh
programmers.... :)
