Nope.

It allows you to ping "fake" dns-able hosts for private use.  My 
/etc/hosts file looks like this:

168.215.193.75  avenir.dhs.org avenir

And that allows me to do things like "ping avenir" and have it actually 
resolve to the correct IP.  Also, "ping avenir.dhs.org" resolves to the 
proper IP address without having to contact a DNS server.  By default, 
your system will look there for hostname resolution before contacting DNS.

Essentially the same thing as the hosts file, only for Netbios instead of 
IP.  It'll allow you to map a network drive to \\server\share rather than 
\\192.168.1.10\share.

The whole thing is really quite optional for the most part, but it does 
make it "easier to do."
