I've used two packages. One of them is free (and poor quality), but I
don't remember the name, and the other is Xwinpro, which works very
well, but it's unfortunately commercial-ware. My girlfriend has used
Hummingbird's Exceed, and she says it's just as good as xwinpro. I'm
not sure if that one's free or not. Lemme know if you need any help
setting up the whole thing. I love remote X, and I feel it's one of the
coolest things about unix. :)

There are litterally dozens of very high-quality text editing for Linux
(much more than you'll find for windows) -- after all, we do a lot of
config file editing.:) My favorite is Joe, but some of the more
hardcore folks make fun of me for it. It's both easy to learn in the
beginning, and has a lot of options when you're ready for them. Vi and
Emacs are generally the niche favorites. You'll find a lot of unix
geeks using them, but they're generally harder to learn in the beginning
(I still have no clue in either of 'em). Pico is a favorite among
beginners. It's very easy to learn, but it's low on features, and I
really don't like it that much. These are all just console editors, but
I think you'll find that just popping up an xterm and running the editor
is easier than using one editor at the console, and another that only
runs in X later on. I do all of my editing in Joe, but I'm only 'at the
console' when I'm ssh'ing in from work or something.
