By default the server we have created /home/user
cgi scripts could be run from anywhere- they didn't HAVE to go in the
cgi-bin.
Which would be ok...but I'd have to change the /path/to/the/script
in each cgi script I uploaded to get em to work.
(Also my users were complaining that they didn't know how to get em
to work either)
So I made sure all default homes had a www and cgi directory.
Also I wanted each user to have a directory that was hidden-
I suppose I could have made a /public and a /private directory...
this seemed easier (and within my skills;)

I did everything I could read at http://proftpd.org/docs
even posted to the proftp list at sourceforge
nothing worked- some users could upload/chmod
others couldn't
-I changed the umask
-tried to enter <Limit> SITE_CHMOD</Limit> directives
-tried a hand write a <VirtualHost> entry
-took a look at the Pam file (which was scary by the way)
Nothing worked- except deleting the affected user and adding them again.
All work as they're supposed to

Ok, I just had that class in unix 101. what I changed probably wasn't the
ENV path... I just didn't know what to call it.
Our teacher had us take a normal unix command out of the path and run it,
just to show us that the utilities HAD to be in the path
(or else we would have to put em in the path)
We did a path=PATH in the lab to demonstrate to us that if a utility wasn't
in the path, we'd not be able to run it with out the /usr/bin/whatever in
the path
I still have to read the chapter...
next week we learn vi
(I like pico so far)
just learned how to lynx http://rpmfind.net/rpmthatIwant.rpm
and download it, then do rpm -Uvh xxx to install it
it's fun, but I'm really, REALLY green at this
WinSCP is a really cool (free) way to ssh in from a windows box
http://winscp.vse.cz
My users could have used winSCP, but they couldn't edit html from it like
they can in cuteFTP
secureCRT is cool too (although expensive)
