Thanks Nigel

umm, so the netbuei (that's probably spelled wrong...)
will only be useful for the communication between the
98 boxes...
umm, sounds like I should do away with netbuei altogether.
but I'm using a linksys...it's already assigned an ip because
it's a dhcp server in addtion to what ever else it does
(that I don't yet understand...port forwarding? filtering???)
Can the nic have 2 ip addresses at the same time??
One assigned by the router and one for lan sharing?
Can a nic do that?
Or can I send both lan file sharing and Inet sharing via the
same ip address?
<thinking out loud...>
this rasies securtity questions...umm, maybe not...the internal
ip addresses are translated thru the NAT and non routable via the
Internet???
Am I on the right track or hopelessly confusing myself from
almost
enough info???
