There's something else no one has mentioned yet: email is not secure.  One
doesn't have to be at your workstation to intercept it.  If I have control
of your mail server, or a sniffer on your network, I can snoop the whole
thing anyway.  PGP is really the only way around this.

Securing your workstation comes next.  If you're comfortable with it, I
suggest you format the machine and reinstall everything from scratch, or
have someone you trust do it for you.  Then install some sort of
monitoring/locking software to prevent people from putting anything on the
machine.  If it's an option, don't run windows (especially not win9x) -
it's a security nightmare.
