I did try the utility disk, but it would hang while 
probing for the card.  Here is what happened:

I went in to change the BIOS settings and noticed
that the Reset on boot parameter had been switched
off.  It had originally been on and I know I didn't
change it.  Someone else had access to the box so 
they must have been fiddling with it (although she
swears she didn't).
