Windows 2000 is not intended for home use. MS changed their driver
model, so for a year or so, a lot of hardware will not be supported (in
fact, Linux supports a lot more at this point). There's also the issue
of software compatibility: lots of stuff won't run on Win2k that did on
98. From *looking* at win2000, everything seems quite like 98, but when
you get down to the configuration and whatnot, things are actually quite
different, and usually buried deep in some wizard.

As for the user-friendliness of Unix, things are getting a lot better,
so don't count out the upgrade from windows to linux. If you're looking
for an easier-to-use-than-Linux change from win98, and you don't mind
the lack of support for awhile, than Win2K might be for you. (Blah,
*puke* I can't believe I just said that :) )
