I would boot with your distributions boot/root pair. Slackware has bare.i
and color.gz that are written to separate disks for booting. The
filesystem includes cfdisk, a nice graphical frontend to fdisk.
There is, of course, no gaurantee that it'll work, but I guess it's worth
a shot, right?
