John, thank you for the windows realm tips on your site- I finally figured
out how
to get a second ide channel on one of these free Gateway 486's.
I loaded win95b onto one of the 212m hdd, added ie4, added aol4.0, and Norton
Ultil 3 and that hdd is full. Installed an ide/IO card and put the cdrom and
another 212m hdd onto the card. The part I had trouble with was figuring out
how windows chooses hdd controllers- I chose the standard bus mastering
controller for the onboard ide channel and randomly tried some of the others
till I hit on it: the onboard one took irq 14 so I jumpered the ide card as
secondary and irq 15...the swap file is on there @110m and the 95 cab files
as well (minus cs3kit and wowkit or whatever there called) the phoneix bios
(dated 1988) doesnt detect the hdd or cd rom but windows device manager does.
This 486 has a dx66 cpu, (slow) pio mode 0 hdd's, and only 16m fast page ram-
putting the swap file on the secondary ide channel really made all the
difference in the world- on your page you said it ought to double the
performance and it does seem to do just that. Aol loaded itself as the 16bit
version so I cant use ie yet- 16bit version wont multitask, will have to
install the 32bit one to see how much it slows everything down- it will a
little, so will dun1.3 I suspect.
Right now I cant tell any difference in speed between this 486 and my p133
boxes with 32m edo ram, so the swap on the secondary ide tip (along with
nortons putting the swap on the outer tracks of the hdd) really seems to make
a BIG difference!
David
