Well, I don't know how it is in the US, but over here in Australia cheques
don't clear until they have received clearance from the bank of the cheque.
As an example, I'm waiting for a cheque to clear from EmailCash (like those
AllAdvantage, etc. programs), the funds show up in my account but I can't
touch them until the bank has confirmation that the funds are in EmailCash's
account and has taken them out.

This takes anywhere between 3-7 working days, and even happens if it is the
same bank (just a different branch).

And, even if the cheque was real, I doubt that the account that the cheque
was written on would have these funds available for all these people.
