[COMP] Samba bug

To the folks on COMP: I thought I'd pass this on to you too, since
I advocate Slackware's linux distribution so often, and I wouldn't want
you having the trouble I've had. :) To everyone else, this is just
general info I thought you might like to know about...

I posted a problem to linux-kernel about the crashes I've been
experiencing with smb-mounted filesystems, and it turns out to not be
Linux's fault at all, but a bug in samba-2.0.5a, which as it happens, is
the version that ships with Slackware 7.0. (To anyone not using
Slackware, you should still upgrade.) This one's been frustrating, and
I blamed it on other misc hardware problems until it happened to my
office machine earlier this week. I hadn't heard anything about this,
so I'll assume there are others this might benefit too.

The problem involves a race condition/crash caused by smbmount/smbfs,
for anyone interested. Version 2.0.6, released in November, fixes this
bug.

The v2.0.6 source can be downloaded from samba.org and their mirrors,
and for the folks at ISU, there's a local mirror at
ftp://139.102.49.22/pub/linux/ , including the Slackware package.
