[COMP] New archive search engine

I tried out an open source search engine called ht://dig for a job
yesterday, and I was immediately impressed. So I installed it on Avenir
Web this morning, and set it up to search the COMP archives (at
http://avenir.dhs.org/archives).

Searches can now be performed on the entire archive in a matter of a
couple seconds. Searches previously took over a minute at times, and the
situation was only getting worse as the archive grew.

I have only the software to blame for the slowness. (Granted, Av web's
only a 486 ;) ) I had been using the Xavatoria engine, which consists of
a couple perl-based scripts (one to build the archive, the other to search
it) that are easy to install, yet leave a lot to the imagination for
performance. ht://dig is C-based, so it's very fast, and being a GPL'd
product, we can expect constant improvement in features, performance and
effeciency.

An archive of COMP has been kept since about 2 months after it was started
back in 1999. It is available at http://avenir.dhs.org/archives/.
Enjoy...

John
