I would like to suggest that there are two types of new users though.  

1) The person who wants to learn the OS enough to use it daily, get
their work done, and shutdown at night and go to sleep.

2) The person who wants to dig right into it, edit files instead of
drag-n-drooling his way through it.  He wants to configure his own
kernel, customize everything to the bone.  This guy really wants to
*learn* it.  

For #1, sure, Redhat, Caldera, or Corel are enough.  For #2, I'd suggest
Slackware (yay!) or Debian.  Personally, I'll never voluntarily run
Redhat again...
