If you can afford it, I would humbly suggest you get a boxed version of
RedHat and install from CD-ROM.  After installing it then you could get
the "Linux Network Administrators Guide" from O'Reilly (yes, I know it
is outdated, but still a great newbie resource imho).  After reading the
first few chapters you will have a basic understanding of TCP/IP and how
it is configured under Linux.  Then go on to read the ipchains-howto.  Once
that is done and your Linux box is running as an internet gateway then
congratulations,  you are now a sysadmin.  :)

Also keep in mind that through all of this, you have lists like this with
people chomping at the bit to give you a hand when you need it.
