I've been thinking about something lately, because the whole term
"SysAdmin" is taking on alot more power nowadays. Getting closer
to the term "Lawyer" or "Physician" ... even "Plumber".
Wondering if it might be good to have some sort of association,
something which makes sure that others within our profession are
bound by a certain set of ethics?
No, I don't like being "controlled" any more than anyone else, but
Microsoft has come out with that MCSE thingy, should there perhaps be
some sort of organization for UNIX SysAdmins as well? One could say,
"BSCS", but that is necessarily true imho.
It would be something where customers know that if a SysAdmin comes in,
certified, that he stands the chance of being "DisBarred" if anything
unethical is done. This way the customer has at least a sense of safety,
and there is a price to pay for the sysadmin if anything unethical occurs.
Perhaps some "technician" somewhere shouldn't be doing things like
delegating IP's. Perhaps it should be a qualified SysAdmin who is
doing it, instead.
What do you think?
