Eric Raymod, el primo open source evangelist, was scheduled to give a talk at a
nearby college as part of an ACM symposium. I jumped at the chance to attend,
since I love hearing people tout the benefits of open systems.
Eric (or ESR) has devoted his life to doing nothing but flying around the world
giving speeches on all things open source. His book, the Cathedral and the
Bazaar, discusses the two big paradigms of software development- open and
closed design. He gives his talks for free, provided you pay for all of his
expenses. Sounds like a nice guy, right?
Well, today passed, and I still didn't meet any big-time wizards of the open
source community. Why? Because ESR missed his flight, and rather than
attempting to make it up to the group that so anxiously awaited his arrival, he
simply said "well, I'll still come, if you buy me another ticket." Ugh. So
you think you're worth it? Who knows, he probably would be, but the ACM group
that bought the first ticket paid for it out of their own pockets, and couldn't
afford to do that twice.
After reading his webpage (at http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr), I get the impression
that he's a pompus dork, and that perhaps it wouldn't be all that great to hear
him. Kinda like a kid the first time someone says "Santa isn't real," it's
time to hang up my Linux tshirt for the night. Maybe next time Linus will come
to town instead. I hear he's good at keeping appointments.
