Oh hey, nothing "arcane" about those UNIX commands -- "elegant," I feel,
is more accurate. ;)
Anyway, if you haven't read the PPP-HOWTO, I suggest you hit that first.
It's been a couple of years since I've used a modem, but all you really
need is PPP support, either through the PPP module ("modprobe ppp") or
through building it into your kernel (much cooler).
Let's see if that gets you any further.
