Hmm. Sounds like the cable's bad to me, or perhaps the nic's are
misbehaving? Does the manual have any sort of troubleshooting section?

CAT (short for "category") is (I think) just the thickness of the cable.
To do certain levels of ethernet, certain thicknesses are required. It
may or may not be printed on the cable casing what cat level it is. To do
full duplex though, you'll need at least 5.
