Nope, 4-strand cat 5 will do fine.  Your only concern should be whether or 
not it's twisted-pair, and if it worked in the crossover config, it is.

As for the flickering thing, it really depends on what sort of hub you've 
got, not necessarily what's going on on the network at the time.  If it's 
got separate led's for link and activity though, and the link light is 
blinking, chances are there's something wrong with the cable.
