That seems to be a common problem- a friend got Adsl through GTE, and it
took just about a month to actually get him on the internet- he said it
was worth the wait though. :)
The problem is that xDSL is comprised of two major components. There's
the Telco, which provides you with the modem, makes sure your line can
handle it, and does all the wiring. Then there's your "content provider."
This is basically the ISP, and problems arise when the Telco and the ISP
can't get their act together. In GTE's case, they provide both
parts, just through separate departments. DSL's a new service, and I
would think things would get better as time goes on. Keep in mind that
Telcos aren't used to doing this sort of thing.
As for the service itself, I can't say enough good about it. It's -very-
fast, at the "bronze+" level (that's the second-cheapest), you generally
get 128kilobits upstream, and 768 down. That's HALF A T1 downloading!!
And in my experience anyway, you generally do get that kind of
performance. Even if the speed wasn't great though, there's still the
aspect of always being on the internet. For me it was great, because I
had just spent two years in college dorms, where there was a nice high
speed network 24/7. No more dialing, no more busy signals, just walk up
to your machine and check your email. Sweet.
