The problem here is that old BIOS' cannot handle anything above 8GB (The
BIOS actually cannot handle anything above 528 MB, but we've learned how to
lie to it). 8GB drives are possible because a translation table is used
(its sometimes called Logical Block Addressing). This is a way of lying to
the BIOS about the disk's geometry (cylinders, heads, and sectors).
There are two ways to fix the problem. One is to use a program like John
suggested that will put a translation table on the hard drive or as a
program in RAM, or the other is to upgrade the BIOS with one that will
support larger drives. I believe (although I'm not sure) that a BIOS
upgrade will allow quite a few Terabytes. That's a lot of data. Using the
disk manager is the safest way, because upgrading the BIOS can sometimes be
dangerous.
Although I don't recommend it, (unless you are having trouble with the disk
manager) you can usually download a BIOS upgrade from you motherboard's
manufacturer's website.

Hi,
I once had this too.. same numbers. It turned out that my (Intel!!!)
motherboard couldnt handle it. If I had bought a cheap Korean one then,
I could have done it, but now...
Anyway, I downgraded the disk (ie got a replacement). I dont know if
there is a solution (apart from changing the mobo)
