It all depends on your mailer.  I used to use Eudora 4 pro and it too would do 
the same thing  regardless of which isp I was actually connected to it would 
check for mail at all,  however when I used pegasues  I would have to manually 
go into options and tell it which isp I was connected to   and it would then 
check all the email addresses I told it to.   Your email software already knows 
and remembers your  email login passwords  so its not reasking you for it,  
since im not really quite awake yet i do hope that makes some sense.
