never checks? are your sure?
It is possible that you can get to your pop-server via another way, but you
still have to provide an id and password to access your mails.... smtp (sending
mails) will most certainly be blocked (unless its a lousy isp, which gives you
another argument to switch)
However, certain isp's block the pop-server too... there are a few free
providers here who do it, since they get payed a part of your telephone ticks
(flat rate is unknown in this continent)... so i can understand what they do..

To answer your question: yes its quite possible... i even suggest you keep on
checking your mail, and notifying everyone who writes on that address (you might
wanna skip the spam...). If they are stupdi, you might be able to check it for
some time... i still have my emailaccount from my adsl test... and i went to
cable in april :-))
