Glad you asked. :) There are a few reasons.
First and foremost, it's bad. :) Many mail readers (all of the text-based
ones) can't read HTML mail correctly (if at all). When you send in HTML,
you may be ruining the experience for others.
Second, sending in HTML costs generally two or three times the bandwidth to
send and receive the message. Anything that costs bandwidth unnecessarily
is bad. Two problems here: One, it puts strain on your ISP, my ISP, my
machine (Avenir Web's a 486, you know! :)), and the ISP's of everyone who
receives the message. Your 100 kilobyte HTML email ends up costing several
hundred megs of transferred data by the time it's done! Two, some of us
pay for our connectivity by the hour. Downloading a dozen messages that
came through on COMP in HTML costs folks money, and nobody likes that --
this is a free service.
Third, viruses have finally entered the plain-text (sorta) arena. If you
run Outlook, or Outlook Express (others?), you're subject to one of the
latest viruses, which actually attacks through an HTML email. Eek.
Thus, I've made it a policy to keep HTML mails off the list. Sorry for any
inconvenience the policy may cause, but I think it's for the better.
John
