[COMP] Re: CD-ROM drive problems

Hi List,
My neighbor has a Hollywood Computer p133, bought from a
co-worker who was moving away! All went well for a few weeks
til the cd-rom began working intermittently. One of her teenage
boys deleted it from system properties in the belief that it would
re-install itself and all would be well.

Iv'e got the system and could use help in getting her up and running.
It's a Toshiba 8x mod no. XM-5522B. IDE connection.

What the system shows or does:
1. on startup initilization screen it says "CD-ROM interface disabled"
2. in system properties there is no cd-rom listed
3. in system properties under hard disk controllers there are two
listings for standard IDE/EDSI hard drive controllers both
showing conflicts ie.. hardware not working properly or drivers
    not completely installed.
4. entering the CMOS setup utility by Award software inc., gets
you a enter PASSWORD prompt. Needless to say neither myself
nor Stephanie have a clue what it might be, and the co-worker
    is not available.

 What Iv'e done:
1. edited autoexec.bat in an attempt to remove the REM for the
action taken by her son (deleting from system properties)
2. re-installed CD-ROM drivers from my system, the drive now
shows up in my computer, the light comes on briefly when
you close the tray but it will not read a CD.

any and all help or references to sources of help will be most appreciated

 thanks
jdp
