[COMP] Apache and GRPM

Using RPM to unpack Apache on my RH6.1 system is exquisitely difficult. I've
used the graphical GRPM approach to add and install the Apache package, but
when i've done what I thought should have to complete the installation I
cannot find the httpd directory (or any of the other files) in my home
directory.
I then tried rpm-ing it from the command line. I copied the package to my
tmp folder. I then created an apache folder in /etc and typed:
rpm apache-1.3.9-4.rpm and enter (maybe I am missing a few options, but
essentially this is what I did). I saw some stars printed, which I thought
indicated complete unpackaging, and when this was done I was amazed to still
see nothing.
Argggh! This is frustrating. I don't believe that I will know what to do to
play with my new development environment even when I do get the blamed thing
unpacked. Because I have yet to purchase a hardware modem my Netscape is
giving me nothing but errors. What can I do? All I want to do is develop web
pages that can use Java and eventually PHP and MySQL databases so I can
learn these technologies. I was hoping that this experiment will be possible
on a low-end machine like my P90 w/ 32Mb of RAM and make it worthwhile to
purchase a better machine designed for Linux, but as it stands now I am
thinking that I need to invest in a good book on simply learning Linux. I
already have Sams' Using Red Hat Linux 6.0 book, which is cryptic to say the
least.
Please save this once-happy hopeful Linux user before he becomes a Win-man
again.
