I totally agree with you about not fully understanding the way telnet  works. 
 I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to navigate telnet and  trying to 
realize what I could do when logged in.  It's funny because it's  a much more 
simple program than the world wide web, yet more difficult to  use.  That is 
probably because we haven't been exposed to it before  though.  Also, the world 
wide web is set up so it's almost a no brainer, in  my opinion.
